Day 6

30th June - Day 6 Kirkby Stephen to Grinton

Started out at 6.50am temperature a chilly 4 degrees.

The road was steep to the top of Hartley Quarries with good views of Kirkby Stephen. And then on to Nine Standards as this was the first objective of the day at 2,170 ft this was the last time they will be over 2,000ft on the walk. The Cairns are massive!

The boys were lucky to see the views as shortly after low level clouds descended and they only just found the path down in time.

They then travelled through the peat bogs, the bogs entailed them wading shin deep for 2 miles descending…. Energy sapping!

They then headed past some of the waterfalls Keld is famous for, Keld village is officially the half way stage of the walk! From there they then enjoyed walking alongside the River Swale and into Reeth Village and then onto the hostel at Grinton.

Feet starting to feel the effects now

115 miles now completed

Tomorrow will be 33 miles but is the flattest part of the walk.

Wading shin deep through peat bogs - the things you do to help those hounds eh?! I just hope you poked your peat-bogged feet under one of the Keld waterfalls (although I gather there is not much water in the falls right now!) for a refreshing foot shower.

Enjoy the 'flats' tomorrow. The end is in sight.

I bet that when finished you'll be on such a high you'll want to do it all over again. *grin*

Marc, Steve, the walk, Greyhound Gap and why!

Pc Marc Norman & Pc Steve Bright's Coast to Coast Walk June 25th - July 3rd 2011 - in aid of the Greyhound Gap charity.

The Coast to Coast walk is a 196 mile walk from St Bee's Head in Cumbria to Robin Hoods Bay in Yorkshire. The Irish sea to the North Sea.

The walk passes through the 3 national parks of the Lake District the Yorkshire Dales and finally the North Yorkshire Moors, also passing through along the way the Pennines and the Clevaland Hills.

We have tweaked the walk to make it officially 200 miles and intend to complete this over 8 nights and 9 days which will average each day out at 22.2 miles although some days will be shorter and much longer! depending on the altitutude for each stage of the walk.

Both Steve and I enjoy such challenges and regulary enter long distance runs.

The Gurka Challenge in July 2009 was our last event for charity, for the Gurka Welfare trust and Oxfam, with over £3,000 raised.... the training was taken very seriously and as such a finishing time of 16 hrs 26 mins over the 64 mile course resulted in a 25th placing out of 537 - some 42 minutes quicker than the Parachute Regiment!

We had both discussed the Coast to Coast walk for sometime and had talked about a charity we would like to raise money for....this was when we quickly decided upon Greyhound gap.

We both have a personal reason for choosing GAP as Steve has sadly lost ' MAX ' whom was rescued and was able to see out his remaining 3 years in a loving environment and Marc's family have been rescuing hounds for some 15 years.

We hope to achieve a target of £2,500 to present to GAP through various events that will take place prior to the walk, if you would like to make a donation we and greyhound gap would be very grateful, donations can be made via our just giving page or by contacting Sue aka greyhound lover aka MUM to Marc.

Grey Hound gap is a registered company (No:113207) that rescues, takes in and re-homes death row Greyhounds and Lurchers who find themselves in a ' put to sleep ' situation in UK pounds

Greyhound Gap are trying to raise £100,000 as a deposit for a property and kennels that will enable them to spend more time with the dogs and especially those that that are in need of rehabilitation. In addition to fund raising for this they also need to raise in excess of £6,000 per month for kennel bills, vet bills etc. Greyhound Gap is run by Lisa and her trustee's and a band of volunteers up and down the country, all of which work tirelessly to help any hound in danger!
